Dear Friends!

Our Alumni has decided to proceed with helping our old school (113 years old!) by collaborating with the schools - Primary and Secondary teachers and PTAs together with the Governing Council (representing the Church) to organise a "BACK TO METHODIST SCHOOL NIBONG TEBAL" Carnival, from 11th to 13th of March.

The schools shall organise the carnival games and food fair, etc. The Alumni shall be organising the Dinner at the school on Saturday the 12th. We are also trying to get the necessary approvals and to invite the tertiary institutions (colleges/vocational institutes/universities) to exhibit their products and services at the school.

Friends, we appeal to all of you for HELP. Buy the carnival tickets (RM10 per booklet) and the dinner seats/tables (RM 50/seat,or RM 70/seat, or RM 100/seat).

Spread the word around, find your old friends and family members, visit the school to reminesce and enjoy while you help the school>

The Alumni is also promoting the "Class Adoption Program" where you can contribute RM1500 per year for the class that you pick. This will help to defray the cost of repair and maintenance...

Why are we doing this for the school ? Come and visit the school and you shall be surprised at the dillapidated condition of the school! Students and teachers do not have proper chairs and tables! (rickety plastic chairs of different shapes and colours!)

Yes, we can argue that it is the responsibility of the Church as owners, or it should be the responsibility of the Education Ministry... while the students and teachers suffer! Let us do something for this institution that had been the "beacon of light" for most of us...a "Symbol of Hope" for so many mums and dads with their silent prayer that their kids (the students) will find a better life...a "Sanctuary" for the many under-privileged girls and boys to find friendship...explore new realms of thought...and a place to exercise.

Dear Friends,

1. Are you aware that our beloved school, Methodist School Nibong Tebal has been in existence since 1898? First it was known as the Anglo-Tamil School. Later in 1903, Mr Gnasagamani changed the name to the Anglo-Chinese School. Thereafter, in mid 1950s it was named Methodist School to accommodate the local students from Standard 5 to Form 3. Then Form 4 and 5 classes were conducted in the 60’s.

2. Over the 112 years, the School had churned out exceptional citizens, BUT the structures / buildings of Methodist School Nibong Tebal have deteriorated badly. Furthermore the tables and chairs are in a deplorable state. The school buildings, furniture and surrounding areas are in a pathetic state too. This is made worse because the School is not a fully-aided school which meant that the government is not responsible for the structures and maintenance as it belongs to the Church.

3. The Methodist School Nibong Tebal Alumni (MSNTA) has decided to assist the school to uplift the state of the current buildings and furniture of 50 classrooms to a reasonable standard as we used to have then. The Alumni has decided to assist the school by:

a. Establishing a Classroom Adoption Committee to plan, organise, manage, monitor and implement the project.

b. Appealing to all ex-students of this noble institution to adopt a classroom, by donating RM1,500.00 per annum. Donors are requested to make payment, by crossed cheque addressed to: MSNTA (HLBB A/C No: 19400050888). The closing date to donate /pay shall be 31st January 2011. The reason i m writing to you is I was wondering whether you could send me the copies of Methodian and Gapura that you have. You have mentioned in your blog that the former principal handed his copies to you so I would greatly appreciate it if you could at least make a copy for me.

Another thing I would like to share is that my mother, Inthumathi Muniandy also studied in that beautiful school.(1964-1972) and her 11 siblings are products of this school too. Among them is Dato' Dr. Subramaniam Muniandy( my uncle)who is a plastic surgeon in Ipoh. ( 1954-1965)

I have another sad news since our formation of the Alumni. We have our first member who passed away last Saturday evening due to heart attack.

For those who may not remember, he is the gentleman who had sponsored the bus from Nibong Tebal to Holiday Villa Subang Jaya and back the next morning ferrying many of our teachers and friends to attend the launching of the Methodist School Nibong Tebal Alumni & Dinner on 29 December 2007.

Although I did not get to know him personally, but I have the greatest respect on his character – he reacted quickly to whatever he heard from friends but he was also a sporting gentleman to apologise if he was informed of the actual scenario.

The funeral service shall be held this Wednesday (17 December 2008) at 10.30am at the following address:-

Ex Primary School Headmaster

During the last Eidil Fitri vacation (October 1-5), I made a surprise visit to Mr Tan Teik Hock’s house. He was excited and teary eyed to see me, but I must say, that I was the one caught by surprise! The sight of the former elegant HM, who is now reduced to a frail senior citizen, living in a very simple detached home with his (formerly vivacious) wife and without any children of his own, simply stumped me! I began to understand the pain of loneliness!

He is having weak legs which are normal for many people pushing 78 years old. As such, he sleeps on the ground floor. He is also afflicted with nervous disorder which is a more sensitive problem.

I summoned our Abdul Halim (GM of Holiday Villa Subang), who was also on vacation, to quickly come over and add more cheer to the elderly couple. I passed him a set of the latest DVD on the “Alumni Launch2008” plus the remake of “Tribute to our Teachers 1998”, but to our surprise, they do not have a PC or a DVD/VCD player. We promised to get him one, and he gave away to me all his collection of the Methodist Primary School magazines (Gapura and The Methodian).

(Unfortunately, I did not have enough time to organize the DVD player but only managed to catch Mr & Mrs Khor (former Miss Yee) at their home before they left for a tour of China that same evening. I also passed them the set of DVDs)

Yesterday, on the 8th of December, Abdul Halim and Yong Han Foo visited Mr & Mrs Tan Teik Hock and passed them a new DVD/VCD player. Yet another surprise – their television is a very old set that is not capable to receive the video. So, I have already pre-approved a budget from the Alumni for Yong Han Foo to purchase a 21-inch new TV and fix it at their residence by this weekend, latest. I trust all members will support my decision on this.

Chin Pick Yee & Peter Lim

Many of the close buddies of Pick Yee attended the wedding reception of her son at the Eastin Hotel on the 23rd of November . This was a special occasion for the 1970 batch (including the undersigned) as both the sophisticated couple, Pick Yee and Peter Lim Siew Hwaik, has long migrated to Canada. This was followed by a gathering of the ex classmates at Holiday Villa Subang (where-else) on the 2nd of December.

At this gathering, our Cikgu Ismail (famous for his punches) made a surprise entrance. Apparently he had been residing at our Tommy Hng’s residence for a few days, while his wife was attending a residence training program in KL. Most of the guys (me, included) felt so miserable looking at the 72-year-old teacher, ever so slim and fit in his dungarees (reminiscent of James Dean)! Uncannily, Sim Chew(the event coordinator) arranged for another ex classmate, Khor Kai Tong to speak on “Longetivity”.

Remembering Sabee Mohd

I have been informed that Sabee Mohd who used to be with us in the primary school passed away, yesterday morning(8TH OF December) in KL. Burial was done in Penang.

For those of you who can’t remember too well, he was a lanky kid who was passionate and noisy on the soccer field. After school hours, he would work at the ‘mamak’-restaurant owned by Kol. Suleiman’s father.

I believe he left us after Standard 6(1965) and continued his studies in Penang. He was later employed as a technician at the airport services in Bayan Lepas.

With his passing, that makes it the second person after Vadiveloo, who passed away a few years ago.

I only did my Primary schooling in NTebal - Methodist Primary.

Cos of some silly system - and being in Express class, I was forced to go to Tunku Abdul Rahman School. I believe I finished my Primary school in 1974.

Paul, I have been thinking very fondly of Mrs Lim - she was a Primary Methodist School teacher. She was always the teacher for the Express classes.

May I please ask, if you know anything abt her, any news, any contact info, or any snail mail mailing address, so I can send her a card to tell her I still think of her, and have fond memories of her.

She is the only only teacher that I have had these tender feelings for.

Dear all,

Had the press conference / book launch this Monday, 16th of June as scheduled. After many months of waiting, finally my book was launched!

Many thanks to the Irish Ambassador, His Excellency Mr. Eugene Hutchinson and his lovely wife Mrs. Adele Hutchinson, Deputy Head of Mission Eoin Duggan and all other embassy staff members for welcoming us warmly! So wonderful to hear the Irish accent again!

It was very flattering to hear the Ambassador say such nice things about my book. Important to note also that he has provided an endorsement for the book. Equally nice was signing the book that some of the people in attendance bought while cameras were flashing. Finally, I know what it's like to be a 1/100000000 as famous as a Hollywood celebrity.

Future plans for promotions include a book talk on the 26th of July at MPH, Mid Valley Megamall.If you are in town, please, do join me there!

Lastly, many thanks to Christine, Leo, Cassy, Suhana, Jin Jin and Tammy for your efforts!

We are pleased to inform you that our alumni have organised a monthly get-together which is held at Holiday Villa @ Subang Jaya every last Friday of the month. This meeting shall be an integral activity of the Methodist School Nibong Tebal Alumni where we conduct monthly get-together with a hope of building a beneficial and long lasting relationship amongst ex-students of Methodist School Nibong Tebal. Thephilosophy of this meeting is based on the concept of SERVICE AMONGST SCHOOLMATES. That is, if I can help others, why not I give business to my fellow schoolmates or assist in any way. This is done with the hope that he willreciprocate that relationship by giving me or our other schoolmates business or help. This meeting is also about building trusting and long lasting relationshipamongst members and to look out for or refer opportunities to one another.However we must all remember that we are there to "farm" out opportunities and benefits but not hunting each other, or forcing it onto others.

Giving back to society

A SEBERANG Prai municipal councillor used his maiden councillor's allowance of RM600 to buy ceiling fans for a school and groceries for five poor families in his hometown in Nibong Tebal.

Teoh Seang Hooi, 48, a tuition teacher, said he merely wanted to give back to society.

Since his appointment as councillor in May, Teoh said his 10-year-old son Marcus of SK Methodist Nibong Tebal, had been constantly reminding him to help his school.

“I have seen the children sweating profusely under the hot zinc roof while waiting for their parents to fetch them after school.

“So, I decided to install two ceiling fans at the cost of RM400 at the school porch,” he said yesterday.

Teoh said he would use the remaining RM200 to buy groceries for the families of five needy rubber tappers in Byram Estate.

Coming from a relatively poor background, Teoh said his parents, who were hawkers, had to work hard to raise nine children.

“My family and I experienced hardship and poverty in the past. So, when we are blessed now, we believe we should bless others, in whatever way that we can,” he said.

The school’s parent-teacher association (PTA) chairman Idris Hasan thanked Teoh for the kind gesture, noting that the 110-year-old school had an enrolment of about 600 pupils.

“We hope our old boys will also come forward and render their services.

“Apart from additional computers and a fresh coat of paint for the school building, we also need about RM50,000 to raise the school field, which often floods during a downpour,” he said.

... despite the gruelling more than 36 hours haven't really catching up any sleep at all as my journey back from Shenzhen started 28th. Dec 2120 hrs and the morning itself was at work. After the dinner , we knocked off from KL around 2.00am , reaching Penang around 7.00am a Sunday morning , 30th. Dec , almost 48 hrs without sleep had I not catch some short naps in between during the journey back home from KL.

Well , it is an effort worth spending as I really enjoyed the wonderful moments of meeting up with both Seniors and Juniors as well as my year of 1978.

102-year-old school’s first big gathering

MORE than 700 former students of the Nibong Tebal Methodist School in Penang are expected to attend the 102-year-old school’s first alumni dinner.

The dinner, to be held at Holiday Villa Subang tomorrow (Dec 29), will also mark the formation of the school’s old boys and girls association.

Organising committee spokesman Abdul Halim Ismail said this was the first ever large- scale gathering being held for the former students since they had a get-together dinner about 10 years ago.

He said the dinner would provide the former students with a great opportunity to meet their classmates and schoolmates.

He said the organising committee had even arranged transportation for the former students who were from Nibong Tebal.

“We are also inviting former teachers of the school to come for the dinner as we plan to pay our tribute to them by not charging them for the dinner,” he said.

Once the association was registered, Halim said, funds would be raised in aid of the school through charity programmes.

On the gala dinner, Halim said, an exciting programme had been organised with a live performance by the Three Degrees, the famous all-black female American group.

“The response towards the dinner has been overwhelming and we are expecting more than 700 former students to come,” he said.

I am pleased to inform all ex students of Methodist School Nibong Tebal that we have submitted the application to form our alumni and we are organising a gala dinner on the 29th of December 2007 at the Vintage Ballroom of Holiday Villa Subang Jaya.

The last time we organised our gathering, ‘Tribute to our Teachers’ was 10 years ago, and the late Stanley Padman had expressed his hope that we are able to launch a dynamic and interactive alumni to harness the multitude of talents that have sprung out from our alma-mater and consolidate that into a cohesive force that can perpetuate that goodwill and network for our mutual benefits.

We are flying in the original “3 Degrees” to entertain us for the night, apart from meeting old teachers and old friends! I was in SMMNT in the 90s, actually finished my Form 5 in 1994. Not only me, almost all my family members studied there, sisters, brothers, uncle and aunties. Uncle and aunties were from the 70s', not sure which year. Sisters and brothers were all from the 90s.

I want to find out more about the gathering, and thinking to have a table for my whole family there.

Have you ever been guilty of looking at others your own age and thinking, 'surely i can't look that old. Well, you'll love this one.

My name is Alice Smith and I was sitting in the waiting room for my first appointment with a new dentist. I noticed his DDS diploma, which bore his full name.

Suddenly, I remembered a tall, handsome, dark-haired boy with the same name had been in my high school class almost 40 years ago. Could he be the same guy that i had a secret crush on, way back then? Upon seeing him, however, i quickly discarded any such thought.

This balding, gray-haired man with the deeply lined face was way too old to have been my classmate.

After he examined my teeth, I asked him if he had attended Morgan Park High School.

"Yes. Yes, I did. I'm a mustang," he gleamed with pride.

"When did you graduate?" I asked. He answered, "In 1969.

Why do you ask?"

"You were in my class!",I exclaimed.

He looked at me closely. Then, that ugly, old, bald, wrinkled, fat ass, gray-haired, decrepit son-of-a-bitch asked, "what did you teach?"

So guys, be aware of the sensitivities involved when you make any comments on your old school mates when we meet at the Launch of the Methodist School Alumni (featuring the original 3 Degrees) on the 29th of December.

Another year has passed
And we're all a little older.

Last summer felt hotter

There was a time not long ago
When life was quite a blast.
Now I fully understand

We used to go to friends homes,
Football games and lunches.
Now we go to therapy, to hospitals,
And after-funeral brunches.

We used to have hangovers,
From parties that were gay.

LAUNCH OF OUR METHODIST SCHOOL NIBONG TEBAL ALUMNI

All of us have 3 common factors in our past.

One – we stayed in Nibong Tebal and its neighbouring towns during our growing up years.

Two – we studied at Methodist School Nibong Tebal.

Three – we were a product of a caring society that did not differentiate race, religion and wealth.

In fact my friends, these three factors, which most of us took for granted have now become a unique, hard-to-find commodity!

We came through our adulthood with a breeze without the hangover of coming from a (very) small town or a small school. In fact that school was BIG if we consider the immense wealth of goodness packed in us during our ‘metamorphosis’! We have no problems in competing with the best and we can be friends with anyone. This unique quality has shaped all of us today, but alas….it is sadly missing in most other societies today!

So let us make it a point to attend this Gala Dinner scheduled on the 29th of December. Let is give our support to this wonderful initiative to fulfill the wish of the late Stanley Padman to create an interactive alumni. Let us stamp our mark of approval to propagate this “esprit de corps”!

Growing up in the heady atmosphere of a newly independent nation, one young Malaysian learns that ‘impossible’ is a word invented by people who don’t dare to try.

I WAS born before Merdeka (in 1955, to be exact) and, throughout the years when I was a growing teenager, I remember that Tunku Abdul Rahman was a household name.

My parents spoke of him with reverence and much love and I remember many neighbours and friends doing the same thing.

What was it about the Tunku that inspired ordinary citizens to hold him in such high regard and adoration?

Perhaps it was because he was the Father of Independence as well as the Father of Malaysia, who, together with his Chinese and Indian friends, achieved independence for our country from the British without the shedding of a single drop of blood.

Perhaps it was because he was the first Prime Minister who was most successful in bringing all the races in Malaysia together as one nation. (Thank God for our present PM, Datuk Seri Ahmad Abdullah Badawi who places great importance on national unity.)

Perhaps it was because he was the Chairman of The Star in 1977 and endeared himself to Malaysians further with his columns “Looking Back” and “As I see It”, which lent his firm and fair voice to be recorded in the minds of all peace-loving Malaysians.

Whatever the reason, he did inspire me in a very personal way when I was just 14. I remembered his gallant effort to gain independence by going all the way to England and I got the idea one day that I, too, should do something to show the world that “Malaysia Boleh,” even though the phrase had not yet been coined then.

I knew of a popular British comic called The Dandy which had a whole page featuring “My Home Town”. At that time, it had never mentioned a single town from outside Europe.

In September 1969, I wrote some facts about my very own home town, Nibong Tebal, drew some pictures and mailed them to the magazine's London office address.

The Tunku was the first thought on my mind when I penned the article – and I tried to relate Nibong Tebal with him studying in Penang Free School, which was a distance away.

I remembered how some of my family members and friends ridiculed me for trying to do the “impossible” – getting published in a foreign magazine!

Well, my story proves that nothing is impossible. After the Nibong Tebal story came out in the April 6, 1970, issue, the editor of The Dandy informed me that I was the first Asian to have a contribution published and have my hometown/ country written about in his magazine!

The Tunku was truly my inspiration so I want to dedicate this memorable feat (even if no one will think of giving me an award or medal for it!) to Tunku Abdul Rahman Al-Haj, my beloved first Prime Minister who is gone but never forgotten.

(The Dandy is one of the world's longest running comics, having being in continuous publication since 1937. Recently, however, its traditional weekly format was changed to a fortnightly magazine called Dandy Xtreme to cater for the tastes of modern youngsters. Favourite characters such as Desperate Dan continue to feature in the pullout, Dandy Comix.)

Little did you know ...... after reading THIS, you'll NEVER look at petai in the same way again!

Petai contain three natural sugars -sucrose, fructose and glucose - combined with fiber, petai gives an instant, sustained and substantial boost of energy. Research has proved that just two servings of petai provide enough energy for a strenuous 90-minute workout. No wonder petai is the number one fruit with the world's leading athletes. But energy isn't the only way petai can help us keep fit. It can also help overcome or prevent a substantial number of illnesses and conditions, making it a must to add to our daily diet.

Depression:
According to a recent survey undertaken by MIND among people suffering from depression, many felt much better after eating petai. This is because petai contain tryptophan, a type of protein that the body converts into serotonin, known to make you relax, improve your mood and generally make you feel happier.

PMS(premenstrual syndrome):
Forget the pills - eat petai. The vitamin B6 it contains regulates blood glucose levels, which can affect your mood.

Anemia:
High in iron, petai can stimulate the production of hemoglobin in the blood and so helps in cases of anemia.

Blood Pressure:
This unique tropical fruit is extremely high in potassium yet low in salt, making it the perfect to beat blood pressure. So much so, the US Food and Drug Administration has just allowed the petai industry to make official claims for the fruit's ability to reduce the risk of blood pressure and stroke.

Brain Power:
200 students at a Twickenham (Middlesex) school were helped through their exams this year by eating petai at breakfast, break, and lunch in a bid to boost their brain power. Research has shown that the potassium-packed fruit can assist learning by making pupils more alert.

Constipation :
High in fiber, including petai in the diet can help restore normal bowel action, helping to overcome the problem without resorting to laxatives.

Hangovers:
One of the quickest ways of curing a hangover is to make a petai milkshake, sweetened with honey. The petai calms the stomach and, with the help of the honey, builds up depleted blood sugar levels, while the milk soothes and re-hydrates your system.

Heartburn:
Petai has a natural antacid effect in the body, so if you suffer from heartburn, try eating petai for soothing relief.

Morning Sickness:
Snacking on petai between meals helps to keep blood sugar levels up and avoid morning sickness.

Mosquito bites:
Before reaching for the insect bite cream, try rubbing the affected area with the inside of the petai skin. Many people find it amazingly successful at reducing swelling and irritation.

Nerves:
Petai is high in B vitamins that help calm the nervous system.

Overweight:
Studies at the Institute of Psychology in Austria found pressure at work leads to gorging on comfort food like chocolate and crisps. Looking at 5,000 hospital patients, researchers found the most obese were more likely to be in high-pressure jobs. The report concluded that, to avoid panic-induced food cravings, we need to control our blood sugar levels by snacking on high carbohydrate foods every two hours to keep levels steady.

Ulcers:
Petai is used as the dietary food against intestinal disorders because of its soft texture and smoothness. It is the only raw fruit that can be eaten without distress in over-chronicler cases. It also neutralizes over-acidity and reduces irritation by coating the lining of the stomach.

Temperature control :
Many other cultures see petai as a "cooling" fruit that can lower both the physical and emotional temperature of expectant mothers. In hoiland, for example, pregnant women eat petai to ensure their baby is born with a cool temperature.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) :
Petai can help SAD sufferers because they contain the natural mood enhancer, tryptophan.

Smoking:
Petai can also help people trying to give up smoking. The B6, B12 they contain, as well as the potassium and magnesium found in them, help the body recover from the effects of nicotine withdrawal.

Stress:
Potassium is a vital mineral, which helps normalize the heartbeat, sends oxygen to the brain and regulates your body's water balance. When we are stressed, our metabolic rate rises, thereby reducing our
potassium levels. These can be rebalanced with the help of a
high-potassium petai snack.

Strokes:
According to research in "The New England Journal of Medicine, " eating petai as part of a regular diet can cut the risk of death by strokes by as much as 40%"

Warts:
Those keen on natural alternatives swear that if you want to kill off a wart, take a piece of petai and place it on the wart. Carefully hold the petai in place with a plaster or surgical tape! So, you see, petai really is a natural remedy for many ills. When you compare it to an apple, it has four times the protein, twice the carbohydrates, three times the phosphorus, five times the vitamin A and iron, and twice the other vitamins and minerals. It is also rich in potassium and is one of the best value foods around. So maybe its time to change that well-known phrase so that we say, "A Petai a day keeps the doctor away"

Dinner in Wellesley with 3 Sirs of SMMNT

Just came back from the dinner with 3 SIRS of our SMMNT ,Sir Tan Jin Lye , Sir Tan Teong Leng and Sir Richard Lye. Among us who were present was Hun Foo , Ewe Jin , Ee Sin , Chin Joo , Munusamy , Puspakaran , Goh See Seong , Kee and myself ( Aun Soon ). Had rounds and rounds of Beer and one bottle of Green Label , Johnny Walker while Sir Jin Lye and Sir Teong Leng taking Or Kow ( Guinese Stout ) and Sir Richard Lye on special brew. Was kinda really high and could hardly drive the car. It was an enjoyable occassion and the honour of the presence of our Sirs , Tan Jin Lye , Tan Teong Leng and Richard Lye. Lots and lots of stories including stories about woman too as this time around , all men's talk since there is no woman present. Arrived at the seafood restaurant , Sar Liap Kau or something like that , Wellesly around 8.00pm and the drinking session started straight away while the food came in dish by dish after the cleaning and lubricating of our throats with the liquid boosters , Beer , Green Label , Or Kow and Special Brew respectively. We adjourn almost past midnite and saying adious to each other and looking forward to more of this gathering. Was a nice and memorable head start , looking for more to come. Attached herewith are two photographs taken for you to look at your beloved Sirs. Me sitting in the center , on my right ( left of this screen or your view ) is Sir Richard Lye while Sir Tan Teong Leng is on my left , your right. Sir Tan Jin Lye is just beside Sir Richard Lye. It was unfortunate that Sir Khoo Poh Kheng could not join us and a few more other teacher. We will organise more of this kinda small gathering and sessions , inviting our Sirs and Teachers. - Time check it is now 1.13am on a beautiful Sunday , 15th. SMMNT Form 5 of 1978 - Gathering in Subang Holiday Villa on the 1st. May 2007

The spirit has been there all these while , eversince leaving school some 29 years or more ago , across all the years of fellow Methodian of SMMNT - the thought of organising the gathering of fellow classmates and schoolmates to maintain contact of each other after Form Five, has always been in the thought only and hardly did they materialise except on some limited scales of fellow SMMNT from different years. Although among the many , some may have been maintaining contact after bumping into each other by accident or some may have been in contact as working colleague on deliberate or by chance but never have there been any to experience a gathering of this big scale ( I would consider to this be ). When I receive a mail from Boon Hoy informing me about the gathering to be happening on 1st. May 2007 , a month or so before the eventfull date , I was so excited and started calling all the contacts I have with me , both email and mobile contact that I managed to get from Jade Lee Lee Yoke some long time ago and still keeping it. I called up Han Foo and Jade Lee and it seems these three person , all from the Express class group are the co-organisers for this eventfull day to be happening in Subang Holiday Villa , Robest Yong was kind enough to have the announcement published in his website then. Han Foo together with Thum Yin Kew ( although she did not join ) have been kind enough to co sponsor in chatering a coach to shuttle us , the participants from Penang and Nibong Tebal to KL starting the journey at 7.30am but alas , only 10 showed up to fill the big coach for 40 over pax but never mind , the spirit did not die as the show up from KL folks have been very encouraging as they started to come in one by one from 1.00pm. Wow , by around 2.30 pm , the attendance already showed about 30 over and everybody was busy talking to each other with all the many lost years to catch up. By the late evening , a count taken indicates that the total show up was about 42. We felt so honoured to have the patronage of our seniors , the Yong brothers , Robest Yong wife and son and Lawrence Yong who took the effort to drive all the way from Taiping to join us - Thank You Lawrence and Robest for hosting the site for our posting. Now I am posting this write ups , late but meaning full to share with those who are interested with the permission of our other senior Mr. Paul Leong.

During the gathering , everyone was so busy and occupied talking to each other and you can hear surprises like " Wah you never change ah " ; "wah I wouldn't recognise you if I were to bump into you in the supermarket loh " ; or " Loo Si Ti Tiang ? " in Teochew means who are you ? and the many many exclaimation that you can laugh on it. You can see the emotional hugging among the ladies , of course the men did not do that but I felt like doing so for , however did not do that. Time passes by fast , lunch has been waiting and nobody seems to realize that their tummy has been crying crrrrr , crrrrr until finally about 3.00pm that one by one everyone starts to slowly walk into the buffet line to pick up their food , special offer from Subang Holiday Villa's GM En Abdul Halim Ismail who happened to be also our fellow senior SMMNT.

After the good meal while still continuing in the exchanging of "words" and stories of old times and catching up from 1978 , fast forward to 2007 , the photo session was called.

Not a short while later , pooop , it is already late into the evening and time to call it a day , although still got lots more to catch up but everyone has to go back to their husband and wife or family while the Penang folks gotta catch the waiting coach back to Penang. Time check it was already 30 minutes past 7.00pm and it is about time to leave but still some are reluctant but in the end , our bus starts somewhere around 8.00pm heading up north to Penang.

I have some photo and video clips which I have compiled into a DVD and shared with those who are interested. I will post more photos in my next write up but here I will only post the group photo. Bye for now , it is already 45 mins past midnite and I gotta wake up early tomorrow morning for work. Will write more with more photo postings later on.

Dear Sabrina,

I am overwhelmed to read this email from you and now realise that the students of our humble school are now all over the globe. Soon our Alumni shall have “branches” in Sydney (Australia), California (USA), Toronto (Canada), London (UK), UAE, Hong Kong…and the list may go on!

What started as a fervent desire to fulfil the wish of our late principal, Mr Stanley Padman; has now evolved to another level of calling! Initial objective is to perpetuate and expand the “esprit de corps” and reinforce the goodwill that we enjoyed in our childhood days. We wanted to also provide the linkage to the new batches who are coming out into the world from the small town.

Now I can see that we can help pave the way for the ex-students who aspire to become global managers, as well as becoming effective ambassadors for our Country and reflect the true Malaysian spirit to the rest of the world!

Yes, please continue to link up with our website and we shall improve the contents as we go along.

My heart sank when I read the appeal from Siti Sara to help with the school building fund. I am now stringing along some of our Alumni members to pay a visit to assess the situation before we devise a plan of action.

Meanwhile, please spread the good word around and get more of our ex school mates into the loop. It was during our first major event in 1998 when we organised the dinner “Tribute To Our Teachers” that we discovered the school’s history stretched more than a century. It was ‘de facto’ the first full scale reunion that was a sell-out. The banquet room in Holiday Villa Subang Jaya could not cater for the unexpected turn-out. Lucky for us, the GM (Abdul Halim) was an ex student and he organised about 6 extra tables adjacent to the hall! We had about 280 people who attended, which included 16 teachers (including Tan Teik Hock, primary school head and the late Stanley Padman). The oldest student was someone who left school in 1936!

Hi.......

"It is year end and Christmas is just around the corner; then I got to know that finally, finally after 28 long years I had a chance to meet my schoolmates. Looking at my daughter now...I realised that we were at that age when we parted ways..Form 5.

Since it was Dec and my boss had gone abroad for long holiday as usual.....no chance for me to get any leave....so....rub my hands together...get my mind rolling...and thinking...MC, erh...what if Lawren did get a reporter in....ayuh, habis no job after that !!!...."quarrelled" with husband ha! ha! (a bit jealous lah knowing I may see all my old flames, don't allow me to drive up on my own, so how?), abandon the kids for the weekend, was like a walking clock that Friday evening and shoot out of the office "ngam-ngam" 5.00 sharp......waited almost 2 hours in Puduraya for the public bus and sucking in exhaust fumes for 2 solid hours.......finally, finally hopped into a bus got the highest risk seat....front seat right behind the driver in the center; not window seats and nothing to hold me...)...wondering whether I will survive in the event of a crash; most likely will be flung out of the windscreen lah....Say a little prayer, tried to get some sleep but couldn't as the lights from oncoming cars were flashing and my phone non stop sms-ing/ringing....

Closed my eyes...1-2-3 Arrived ! with one luggage bag and two eye bags...and three minute noodles...at my sister's house. Woke up four o' clock next morning....couldn't sleep...thinking about how many "chai koay, ku-chai one" and "otak-otak" I am going to eat for breakfast lah....tossed and turned, count sheeps; cannot sleep....count chai koay and managed to get back to sleep...

The minute has come....walked into the club...first to recognise...all the old teachers they never changed lah. (somebody asked me whether I am a teacher...wow now your look are same-same with them already ah!) . Forgot to ask Tan Teong Leng what cream he put on his face..shinning one..forever young. And Richard Lye's specs, handphone...also canggih one..he said hand me down from his children's....but his car, very antique...must be very expensive.

Wow, wow I saw Annie, Phaik Ean, Lai Peng, Ai Phang, Lay Cheng.....almost couldn't recognise them...compare some wrinkles and "crow feet" at the corner of our eyes...and chat, chat, chat, then click, click, click, then eat, eat, eat and sing, sing, sing...we never know Annie has good voice......then smile, smile, smile for group photo.....some of your faces not in my camera esp the last row and the right side ones; not my fault..we asked a small cute girl to take lah......

After that, looked around for transport to NT...the Richard Lye, chee- la-kak...wants to charge me so I got a free ride instead...from Lai Peng together with Annie, Phaik Ean and Ai Phang....drop Ai Phang and Annie on the way back to NT. Met up with Nancy Liew, Khor Phaik See and Phuah Lai Sim had Laksa (2 bowls u know..) and Ice Kacang at a place called "Kong Chee" (that place very nice one...KL $$ cannot accept, not legal tender in NT) Suddenly I remembered we got one important guy and tried to call up our friend NT DAP guy to join us.....ai ya he said I came at the wrong time, he doesn't have time......but I think it is not yet election time lah...that's why lo...(Teoh Siang Hooi...just joking)..... after that visited Tan Lee Gaik.

Put up at Khor Kee Ooi's house, went to Sunday Service at NTGH saw my teachers Mr & Mrs Liew there, had lunch with Phaik Ean and her hubby....had Octopus...long la-la...porridge with crabs...still thinking about it now.....

Ai ya, I tell you fellows ahh...don't ever ask Yong Han Foo to buy you bus ticket home....cannot harap one lah, cannot get him after that...call, call, smsmsms fingers also crooked already...no reponse....luckily the other Yong, Lawren came to my rescue....followed him back to Taiping got a bus to KL from there.....and I have Taiping Famous Heow Pieh...want some??? call me..heh heh..

Was a very very tiring trip for me...plus I am already back to my hectic work schedule this morning with toothpick to keep my eyelids open....but all in all I must say that it is indeed worth my trip..my time...every bit of it especially meeting all my teachers and girl friends but I am still wondering why none of the boys in my batch came...hey, come on you guys got no passport to come ah?? So "kia-boh" (scared of wife, in Chinese) ... if you are not....prove it...see you next time round....

Government-funded Wireless@SG offers free wireless Internet for the next three years

Internet users can go online for free at 600 Wi-Fi hot spots islandwide from today, just two months after Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced this wireless broadband service.

The service, partly funded by the Government and dubbed Wireless@SG, will enable people to go online at public places like shopping malls, town centres and the business district.

The 600 free hot spots or wireless zones are the first of 5,000 that will dot the island by September next year.

This means you can, for example, surf the Web, make an Internet call or watch a video on a laptop for free at a cafe.

The service has been extended to three years, up from the two years announced previously, the Infocomm Development Authority (IDA) said yesterday. Operators have not said whether they will continue the free service after this, but competition may drive them to.

To sign up, users have to register online at a Wireless@SG hot spot with their laptop, or call one of the three telecoms operators running the service - iCell Network, QMax Communications or SingTel.

After signing up, a user only needs a single password to get online at any Wireless@SG hot spot.

The service provides surfing speeds of up to 512 kilobits per second (Kbps) -- fast enough for reading news and e-mail. Those who want faster access will have to pay about $10 a month.

This development will go down well with Net surfers, who have enjoyed cheaper and faster broadband services this year. The price for a basic 512Kbps broadband service for homes has come down from nearly $50 a month to less than $30.

The trigger for this has been the Government's efforts to open up the broadband market. It is committing $30 million of the $100 million needed to roll out the Wireless@SG service.

IDA assistant chief executive Khoong Hock Yun said it expects 250,000 users to sign up for Wireless@SG in two years. He is confident it will nudge the telcos into making more innovative offerings.

Briefing reporters yesterday, the three telcos took turns to show off value-added services that ranged from cheap Net calls to short movies on the go.

Freebies will be par for the course. Already, SingTel is offering users who sign up with it a free cup of coffee from Spinelli. QMax is offering a webcam.

Financial advisor Verne Lim, 48, welcomed the debut: "I used to go home to transmit a client's application. Now I can do it on the spot at a cafe."

Bishan Singh Ram - an ex-student of Primary & Secondary Methodist School, NT. Then teacher training in Kuantan. One year my senior. He is Naran Singh (our school) elder brother.

Social activist Bishan Singh dies

KUANTAN: Social activist and environmentalist Bishan Singh Ram Singh passed away yesterday after a short illness. He was 62.

His wife Mary Wai, 66, and children Sunitha, 35, and Jeevan Ram, 33, were by his side when he breathed his last at 6.43am at the Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital.

His death was listed as due to “pulmonary embolism”.

Bishan Singh had undergone a series of medical check-ups since October. His condition worsened over the last two weeks.

The illness had not stopped him from keeping abreast with the latest developments on his favourite topics – community and social work.

To Bishan Singh, Tasik Chini – the country's second largest freshwater lake – was special in so many ways.

He had been in love with the lake since his secondary school days and wanted it to be revived.

Bishan Singh spearheaded a campaign to save the lake and received strong support from the private sector.

“My father has no regrets. He has chosen his path in life and did what he loved best,” said Sunitha.

“Just look around the house compound. He planted his own vegetables as well as tended to the garden,” she added.

Bishan Singh was president of Fomca and the Pahang Consumers Association and was a former Kuantan councillor.

He held the presidency of Sustainable Development Network and was a board member of the Pesticide Action Network, Asia Pacific.

He had offered his services in consultancy for more than 20 years in 22 countries.

His efforts did not go unnoticed and he was the first recipient of the Consumer Advocate Award, and most recently was named the recipient of Langkawi Award by the King.

Born on May 31, 1944, in Nibong Tebal, Penang, Bishan Singh had a Masters in Development Management from the Asian Institute of Management, Manila.

Fomca secretary-general Muhammad Sha'ani Abdullah described his demise as a “great loss to the nation and NGO community”.

Bishan Singh will be cremated at Bukit Ubi crematorium today.

The public can pay their last respects at his residence in A617 Taman Koperasi, Lorong Selamat 24, Kuantan, before 11am.

Gathering of Ex-Methodist Students for the 1970 -75

Lawren Yong is in the midst of organizing a Gathering of Ex-Methodist Students for the 1970 -75 Batch in Nibong Tebal on the 16th December 2006 (Saturday). (This is ideal for the 1972 Batch who will most probably know people two or three years their Senior and Junior.)

Low Ah Bah (1972) has proposed it to be held in the Bukit Mertajam Golf & Country Club - and this is tentative until a better suggestion comes up.

Please mark on your calendar and make a genuine effort to come. Lawren plans to invite all our
former teachers who are still around in NT (and the vicinity - esp. Mrs. Padman who is longing to meet up since Mr. Padman's last 80th Birthday Party in KL some years ago.)

I was at the Cinta Sayang Golf Resort in Sg Petani on 8 - 10 November 2006 for briefing by the Exam Syndicate on the roles of Regional Chief (RO) and the Chief Invigilator for the SPM exams this year. On the last day I got a call from my parents to represent them to attend a wedding dinner of one of our old Methodist School teachers -Mr Khor Teik Chye. Boy was I glad to be in such a function where I was very sure to meet other old Methodist Teachers and friends.

So despite the long tiring trip back from S.P. to my Taiping home first at noon, I got my digital camera ready and drove northward again to the Krystal Palace/ Golf Resort in Val Dor Road (near Sg Bakap) in the evening. For your information, I had a horrid time trying to find the place - went to another golf course instead (The Bukit Jawi Golf course is also in the area) - I also saw several guests lost their way too! Anyway I was right in anticipating that many of our ex-Methodist teachers and students would be found! There was Mr. Tan Beng Chiew, Mr Tan Jin Lye, Mr Richard Lai, Mr & Mrs Liew Jooi Seong, Mr chee Ah Chye, Mdm Khor Chan Tek etc.etc

Of course my quest for more did not stop there as I put up a night in NT at my parent's home and made another few more discoveries of old teachers and friends - including Mrs Padman (and Dr Samuel Padman - who declined to have his pic published! I also met Mr Chee Ah Chye who was the Primary Methodist School teacher near the NT wet market. Incidentally I also met Lim Thean Phee (1971) sister - Lim Siew Kim (1974).

Mrs Padman welcomes any old Methodist boys or girls to contact her at 012-5644540 or 05-7161032. She really has a lot of stories to tell (imagine she still remembers me so well for "helping her with her library work together with my sister Han Fang" - and according to Samuel she also remembers me for my " impressive English and print-quality Handwriting"!) I do hope you all out there can pay her a visit and be surprised by what she has in store for you!

Looking forward to get more contacts as I am sending feelers to all I meet that they can play a big part in getting all their friends in our loop - especially if they view the Methodist School websites which had been made available by you and Robest Yong.

TRIANGLE OATS COOKIES
Preparation & Baking Time: 2-3 hour
Makes: 50 pieces
Per Piece: 0.80g Protein, 3g Fat, 7g Carbohydrates, 56 Kcal (235 kilojoules)

Ingredients

A
1 cup plain flour
¼ cup rice flour
½ cup NESTLE® Nestum Instant Oat
1 cup blackcurrants
150 gm butter or margarine
2 tablespoons caster sugar
2 tablespoons golden syrup
1 teaspoon vanilla essence

Preparations

Sift A ingredients, stir in Nestum Oat and blackcurrant; set aside.
Cream butter, sugar and golden syrup until well mixed. Add essence and fold in flour mixture.
Divide dough into 4 portions. Then shape one of the portions into triangle about 6 cm lengths. Wrap dough with greaseproof paper and chill in refrigerator for 1 hour. Repeat with remaining portion of dough.
Take out triangle out and cut into 2cm thickness and place on lightly greased baking trays.
Bake in preheated 180°C oven for 10 - 15 minutes or until lightly brown. Remove from oven and let it cool for 20 minutes before store in airtight container.

FRUITY NESTUM COOKIES
Preparation & Baking Time: 2-3 hour
Makes: 114 pieces
Per Piece: 0.74g Protein, 1g Fat, 5g Carbohydrates, 33 Kcal (139 kilojoules)

Ingredients

A
2 cups plain flour
¼ teaspoon baking powder
1 cup NESTLE® Nestum
1 cup chopped mixed friuts
½ cup chopped pecan
100 gm butter or margarine
100 gm icing sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla essence, well beaten egg, chocolate rice

Preparations

Sift A ingredients, stir in Nestum, mixed fruits and pecan; set aside.
Cream butter and icing sugar until well mixed. Add egg and essence. Fold in flour mixture.

BLUEBERRY CHEESECAKE

PART I: Base 150g Digestive biscuits Marie biscuits 100g Butter	PART III: Topping 250g Blueberries Filling
PART II: Filling 250g Cream Cheese 200g Whipping Cream 5 Tbsp sugar 3 tsp Gelatin in half- cup ( 125ml) hot water	METHOD: Crush biscuits and mix with butter. Pack well into base of cake tin. Freeze for half an hour. Mix part II together until creamy and smooth and spread over Part I Freeze for 20 minutes Spread Part III over Part II and store in fridge to chill before serving.

PART I: Base

150g Digestive biscuits Marie biscuits

100g Butter

PART III: Topping

250g Blueberries Filling

PART II: Filling

250g Cream Cheese

200g Whipping Cream

5 Tbsp sugar

3 tsp Gelatin in half- cup ( 125ml) hot water

METHOD:

Crush biscuits and mix with butter. Pack well into base of cake tin.

Freeze for half an hour.

Mix part II together until creamy and smooth and spread over Part I

Nostalgia was what I felt when I saw those photos in the blog. Yes, it is a tremendously good idea to be connected and I must say kudos to you for the admirable efforts put in to realise this. I believe the blog can be enhanced with recent photos, eg the then and now outlook to see how we have matured over the years. It would also be a good idea to include photos of our families and anecdotes of those useful lessons taught by our longsuffering teachers. This in a way could be a morale booster for those who see still in the profession. Btw, i'm using my hubby's toy to send this. You already have my address. An E-mail Directory is being compiled and if you want to be included, please contact me immediately. I would encourage you all to forward this letter to as many of your own SMMNT friends/ contacts as possible so that they too can come into the loop.

Anyone out there can organise a Get-together in Nibong Tebal by the end of this year?
Please note that such a planned get-together (as in the 5th August 2005 Meeting ) can offer us a sense of common purpose. We can enjoy a unique opportunity to reflect, to clear away the cobwebs on old friends, or to find the missing pieces of jigsaw puzzles of our old relationships. For some of us, the meeting may offer the bonus of unscheduled time, a rare occurence in our heavily scheduled routines.

Everyone can play a part in what goes on here - the building of bridges to link long lost friends as well as to forge new friendship for posterity . I believe that we all love old friends - especially those we respect and admire. There are also many who had believed in us and meeting again will bring out the best in ourselves.

Remember, no man is a failure who has friends. Ralph Waldo Emerson said: "It is one of the blessings of old friends that you can afford to be stupid with them".

Last weekend (13th August 2006) I drove back to NT to see my parents . And with this mission of compiling the Directory for Methodist Alumni, I drove to the Taman Bahagia (?) Tennis courts where our old teachers have their regular games. Over there I managed to meet- Mr Richard Lye, Mr Khor Teck Chye, Mr Lim Yong Boh, Mr Tan Jin Lye and others like Beng Chiew (not in the pictures). Will try to get more pics the next time. Anyway, I have got some of their phone numbers for compilation.

Dear Friends and All in the Nibong Tebal Methodist School Fraternity,
It's so difficult to keep in contact with one another - letters (snail mail) are really slow and unappealing, phone calls are convenient and fast but they can burn a big hole in your pocket. So that leaves the e-mail which is fast, cheap and effective.

I am in the process of compiling the all the e-mail addresses of our Ex-Methodist NT School to be used as a Directory for all who wants to find their old lost friends or at least keep in touch from time to time (before the final bell rings for some of us to leave this earth).

So, if you have received this mail, please take a minute to
1. Check your name
2. State Mobile Phone no. (for direct and fast contacts if necessary)
3. Let us know the place you are residing in e.g. KL, PJ, UK etc.

Most important, please include the names and e-mails of those Ex -Methodist school friends of yours which you have with you.
This is a great way to trace many of our old friends e.g. I have included the names and e-mail addresses of all my brothers (and a sister in UK) so that those friends of theirs can contact them immediately via e-mail or even phonecalls if necessary. Many people may not be able to attend get-togethers or the organized events but those who know them can communicate and one day, hopefully, they will find the time to be with us. Agree?

I have driven all the way from Taiping to PJ just to attend the function organised by Dr. Mohd Amin and his faithful/ dedicated team of helpers. It's the first Ex- Methodist function I had attended because I was just too busy in the past for such activities. Truly i t's really a good feeling that is worth the time and effort ( and expenses) to find so many people who had been a part of our past life! So I hope I can also encourage those who are around to make a serious attempt to attend such functions in future. There is never a right time IF we do not choose to set a PRIORITY for it.

the AMIN report on the August 5th gathering

My Dear Friends,

In spite of the relatively short lead time, we managed to gather 40 ex students at the COBRA club in PJ!

The atmosphere was electrifying (as always) and no one seemed to bother with the oldies being belted by a solo entertainer (arranged by Kim Hang). I guess it must be the "bond fire" in all of us! The oldest amongst us left school in 1959 and the youngest few left in 1979.

Attendees unanimously voted for an alumni association to be formed and suggested for annual gala dinner function with 2 or 3 smaller and specific-purpose or dedicated gatherings in between. We have a list of volunteers who shall form the pro-tem committee to get the registration in place. It was made clear that the younger friends should participate actively and eventually take over the running of the alumni perpetually. The objectives identified were (a) to facilitate networking; (b) to showcase the unique bonding and integration amongst the various races for the younger generation to emulate; (c) to support the development of specific talents or ideas that can benefit the society; and others that may be identified by the committee.

Towards the end of the function the crowd became appreciative of the entertainer and quite a few were dancing and singing along. The group slowly disbanded at about 6:45pm and a few of us waited to meet another friend, Santirasekaran who flew in from Melbourne for some work. He just happened to call his brother, Sugumaran, who was at the function!

There were many who called/ emailed/ explained about their commitments and therefore could not attend the gathering. We want to thank them for their response and Godwilling all of us shall meet in future gatherings. Dato' Fatimah managed to rope in some of her batch mates to attend her son's wedding reception on the 4^th. Rosna, flew in with her family on the 6^th to spend some time with her parents in Penang. Sandra Tan had to be in Penang during our gathering and our friends in JB/Penang conveyed their best wishes and urged us to provide earlier notice for future events.

Therefore, I hope we can all contribute to update the list of contacts with home addresses, office contact details and indication of your work/business and the year you left(which form) Methodist School, Nibong Tebal.

I want to thank my small band of brothers and sisters, who helped to make the gathering possible. They are : Chandra Kumari, Sim Chew, Kang Kim Hang, Annie Tan, and of course, my personal assistant, Mona Chong.

Please keep in touch and send in your proposal of an ideal name for our alumni.

We have just been informed that our batch of 1970(Form 5), Dato’ Fatimah Saad has fixed Friday 4^th July for her son’s wedding reception. Since many of us will be invited to this reception, the organising committee has decided to shift our much awaited gathering to :

Appreciate if all interested to strengthen our ‘esprit de corps’, kindly confirm your attendance and the number of friends/family members coming with you. This is extremely important as the establishments require our confirmation on the numbers and many will quote on a minimum of 50 pax!

Some of our friends are trying to invite our old teachers and there is possibility of other friends (apart from Sandra Tan Ah Nya’s family) coming in from overseas to be with us!

Count me in. Tan Ah Nya sounds familiar. Maybe I am confused. Just to share with you all. My mother and all her sisters' name are " Ng Ah Nya" written on their birth certificate.!!!! Of course all her brothers are not named " Ng Ah Bah". Just to show how biased some Chinese families are.

Our old school mate Tan Ah Nya (sister of Tan Sai Chuan) will be visiting Malaysia from UK on 28 July 2006. She will be staying at her sister’s house in Damansara Utama before going to Nibong Tebal.

May I suggest that we have a gathering on 29 July 2006 (Saturday), the time and venue to be confirmed later. Or anyone with suggestions, do let us know, and please confirm your attendance for this proposed gathering.

Nibong Tebal Porridge ... part 2

Those of us who are in the KL/PJ area are definitely welcome to Nibong Tebal Porridge aka Julie’s Deli. It is named after Julie Tan (Form Five class 1976). She serves a variety of scrumptious home-cooked NT & Penang food (non-halal). If that isn’t your thing, there is also Western food. With Julie are her two sons and her husband, Vincent helping out. On the stereo, old-school melodies are belted out, recorded by Julie’s third and youngest son who is 16 this year.

Julie Tan’s elder sister is Tan Siew Ngoh (Form Five class 1975) and her father Tan Jin Lye currently stays at Nibong Tebal.

Those of us who still have old NT & Methodist School photographs and would like to share with Julie, be sure to email me the soft copies. Julie is keen to frame some of them up on the wall in her Deli. And of course, I will publish them in this blog.

Met up with Amin a few days ago. He would like to inform all of us that Lim Siew Hwaik (aka Peter Lim) and his wife Chin Pik Yee (both are currently in Canada) plan to visit Malaysia (very likely KL) this May/June. Balram (currently in

) also plans to drop by KL about the same time. This may be just the perfect excuse for us to get together again. Please do suggest some possible dates and meeting place (KL, NT or mana mana yang sesuai) & God willing, as like before, Amin would be able to organize it. I had the privilege of having breakfast with Mogan (Form Five 1972) in Section 11, PJ this morning. It was more than thirty years ago since we last met. Mogan is a senior teacher in Sg Petani and he is blessed with 7 children and a wonderful wife. Best Story to inspire you to help the disadvantage

As she stood in front of her 5th grade class on the very first day of school, she told the children an untruth. Like most teachers, she looked at her students and said that she loved them all the same. However, that was impossible, because there in the front row, slumped in his seat, was a little boy named Teddy Stoddard.

Mrs. Thompson had watched Teddy the year before and noticed that he did not play well with the other children, that his clothes were messy and that he constantly needed a bath. In addition, Teddy could be unpleasant. It got to the point where Mrs. Thompson would actually take delight in marking his papers with a broad red pen, making bold X's and then putting a big "F" at the top of his papers. At the school where Mrs. Thompson taught, she was required to review each child's past records and she put Teddy's off
until last. However, when she reviewed his file, she was in for a surprise.

Teddy's first grade teacher wrote, "Teddy is a bright child with a ready laugh. He does his work neatly and has good manners ... he is a joy to be around.." His second grade teacher wrote, "Teddy is an excellent student, well liked by his classmates, but he is troubled because his mother has a terminal illness and life at home must be a struggle."

His third grade teacher wrote, "His mother's death has been hard on him. He tries to do his best, but his father doesn't show much interest, and his home life will soon affect him if some steps aren't taken."

Teddy's fourth grade teacher wrote, "Teddy is withdrawn and doesn't show
such interest in school. He doesn't have many friends and he sometimes sleeps in class."

By now, Mrs. Thompson realized the problem and she was ashamed of herself. She felt even worse when her students brought her Christmas presents, wrapped in beautiful ribbons and bright paper, except for Teddy's. His present was clumsily wrapped in
the heavy, brown paper that he got from a grocery bag. Mrs. Thompson took
pains to open it in the middle of the other presents. Some of the children started to laugh when she found a rhinestone bracelet with some of the stones missing, and a bottle that was one-quarter full of perfume. But she stifled the children's laughter when she exclaimed how pretty the bracelet was, putting it on, and dabbing some of the perfume on her wrist. Teddy Stoddard stayed after school that day just long enough to say, "Mrs. Thompson, today you smelled just like my Mom used to."

After the children left, she cried for at least an hour. On that very day, she quit teaching reading, writing and arithmetic. Instead, she began to teach children. Mrs. Thompson paid particular attention to Teddy. As she worked with him, his mind seemed to come alive. The more she encouraged him, the faster he responded. By the end of the year, Teddy had become one of the smartest children in the class and, despite her lie that she would love all the children the same, Teddy became one of her "teacher's pets.."

A year later, she found a note under her door, from Teddy, telling her that she was the best teacher he ever had in his whole life. Six years went by before she got another note from Teddy. He then wrote that he had finished high school, third in his class, and she was still the best teacher he ever had in life. Four years after that, she got another letter, saying that while things had been tough at times, he'd stayed in school, had stuck with it, and would soon graduate from college with the highest of honors. He assured Mrs. Thompson that she was still the best and favorite teacher he had ever had in his whole life.

Then four more years passed and yet another letter came. This time he explained that after he got his bachelor's degree, he decided to go a little further. The letter explained that she was still the best and favorite teacher he ever had. But now his name was a little longer.... The letter was signed, Theodore F. Stoddard, MD.

The story does not end there. You see, there was yet another letter that spring. Teddy said he had met this girl and was going to be married. He explained that his father had died a couple of years ago and he was wondering if Mrs. Thompson might agree to sit at the wedding in the place that was usually reserved for the mother of the groom. Of course, Mrs. Thompson did. And guess what? She wore that bracelet, the one with several
rhinestones missing. Moreover, she made sure she was wearing the perfume that Teddy remembered his mother wearing on their last Christmas together

They hugged each other, and Dr. Stoddard whispered in Mrs. Thompson's ear,
"Thank you Mrs. Thompson for believing in me. Thank you so much for making me feel important and showing me that I could make a difference."

Mrs. Thompson, with tears in her eyes, whispered back. She said, "Teddy, you have it all wrong. You were the one who taught me that I could make a difference. I didn't know how to teach until I met you."

For you that don't know, Teddy Stoddard is the Dr. at Iowa Methodist in Des Moines that has the Stoddard Cancer Wing.) Warm someone's heart today. . . I love this story so very much, I cry every time I read it. Just try to make a difference in someone's life today? tomorrow? just "do it".

This is a big surprise to be connected to all of you whom I have not seen since ........

I did see a few when I was working with Saudi Arabian Airlines which I left when I got married in 1982 and had been living in Hongkong for the last 20 years ( Greece and Saudi Arabia before). I used to see Hooi Chen when she was living in London but had lost touch with her - perhaps, Chor Kooi can tell where she is now.

I met Siew Kuan when I went to look for a friend from HK who own an antique shop in KL - she has been working for this friend for a long time - another sweet surprise. I hope she will receive this e-mail as I have not heard from her for a while.

It will be wonderful if we were to meet again - I go back to Penang every 3 or 4 months and can make a stopover in KL too.

Yeah, the wonders of technology making the world a smaller place.However, its still always a surprise when we bump into some old and familiar faces

( don't forget we r pushing 50! ).Apart from the time most of us met up at the reunion, I also meet the NT mates at all sorts of unlikely places...

.like .. Ban Shiong @ KL taxi stand, Kok Yee@ Pg condo swimming pool, Teng Ho @ Pg ferry, Hooi Song @ some Golf club, Giap Seng @ KL IC dept..

The last time I met up with Jit Heng , Lai Guan ( Melbourne) and Kok Hin (Canberra) was in 82 when I detoured to visit them after a Sydney conference.

Lai Guan is also back in KL.Anyone met him recently??

Ah Kooi ( Siew Heor) how are you mate? Btw where in Canada are you now?When was the last time you came back for a visit??
